Los Angeles Escorts: Local writer makes executive producing debut at festival

Kemp’s film, titled “Kelly,” was one of eight documentaries selected to be shown at this year’s festival. According to a news release, the film centers on a young, transgender prostitute who, after fleeing a provincial past, is searching for love and acceptance in Hollywood among a landscape of broken dreams.

According to Kemp, she came in to help Stenson organize a series of interactive photography portraits of prostitutes he was working on in November 2009. Stenson had posted a Craigslist ad calling for Hollywood prostitutes to show up and sit for the portraits — Kelly (nee Raphael Gibson) showed up for the gig and intrigued both Stenson and Kemp.

At the moment they met her, Kelly was making close to $160,000 a year prostituting herself on Craigslist. She agreed to take part in the project, and while filming, Stenson, Kemp and the other crew members involved witnessed a different side of her. In February 2010, she was arrested on prostitution and drug charges. The crew watched and recorded her search for love and acceptance, as well as her constant attempts to escape intolerance and pain.
