… I think it’s an added benefit that I’m an Asian American,” Cheng said. “I think it is important that there are people on council that can bridge different communities together.”
Tay moved to Arcadia in 1984, when few Asians lived in the city.
“Now it’s changed,” he said. “I have the ability to communicate to them because I speak the language. I know a lot of new immigrants here, and they don’t understand the culture in Arcadia.”
Both Lee and Cheng have received support from Chinese-American council members in area cities such as San Gabriel, Alhambra, Temple City, Monterey Park and Walnut. Higher-profile Asian-American politicians, including Rep. Judy Chu, D-El Monte, and State Controller John Chiang, appeared at a fundraiser for Cheng.
Cheng emphasized he wasn’t “running an Asian campaign,” but added there were issues, such as the city’s struggle to regulate the spread of Asian massage parlors, that he is better equipped to handle.
