To make the entire affair seem legitimate, the couple steal away to Paxton’s enormous home in oddly scenic Alaska, where he is treated like an “Alaskan Kennedy” and becomes a domineering superior, eerily calling to mind Petruccio’s similar change upon returning to his home. Alas, the task of taming this manuscript decimating devil is also borne by the rest of the surprisingly wealthy Paxton clan, and they do not disappoint. This is the Paxtons’ home turf, and they use every geographical advantage to force Tate to submit.
At various low points in the film, director Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses) has Bullock gyrate to the strains of Lil Jon’s “Get Low,” be humped into submission by “the only exotic dancer in the state,” have her breasts compared unfavorably to “Easter eggs” and after exhausting all other possibilities, simply fall off a boat.
Some of these bits are truly quite bizarre. The dance to crunk maestro Lil Jon, for example, occurs at a Native American tribal ceremony conducted by Paxton’s obscene and stripper-loving grandmother, Annie (Betty White, Love N’ Dancing).
